What is the meaning of the title "Pen and Paper" by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus?

I really like the lyrics to the song "Pen and Paper", however, I am not seeing a direct connection between the lyrics and the title. Are papers "fake" or pens "fake"? At first I thought it was paper since it's a crowd-pleaser and lets pens do whatever it wants with it, but then it could be the pen because pens do the manipulating. Anyways, I was just curious, I feel like I am not understanding a common idiom/expression. Or maybe the title was just meant to be intentionally ambiguous..
