Why does my jaw pop whenever I open my mouth?

Ever since I got elastics for my braces (the ones that I put in a triangular shape), my jaw has been starting to pop whenever I open my mouth. It doesn't happen all the time, it happens once in a while. My jaw has locked a few times and it has been annoying me. What is happening?
